Film tackles controversy around same-sex ceremony

By Mark Burger
JOURNAL ARTS REPORTER

Ryan Butler's documentary A Union in Wait will be screened at 7 and 9 p.m. Saturday in the Babcock Theatre at the N.C. School of the Arts.

The film nicely encapsulates the controversy that ensued when Susan Parker and Wendy Scott requested a same-sex union ceremony in Wait Chapel on the campus of Wake Forest University. In addition to Parker and Scott, the film includes interviews with journalist Andrew Sullivan, gay-rights activist Candace Gingrich (sister of Newt) and a number of Wake Forest students and local ministers.

Although Parker and Scott were eventually able to have their ceremony in Wait Chapel last year, the issue of same-sex unions remains a hot topic in society, and it is to Butler's credit that both sides of the issue are conveyed as thoroughly as they are within this context.

The film was shown last week at Wake Forest and has been entered into a number of film festivals in the United States and abroad. Butler will be on hand after the screenings to participate in an informal question-and-answer period.

Admission to the screenings is free, but seating is limited. For additional information, call 287-7926 or log onto the film's Web site at www.AUnionInWait.com.
